Things You Need to Know Before Getting a Leopard Gecko

Things You Need to Know Before Getting a Leopard Gecko

Leopard geckos are one of the most popular pet reptiles. They’re well-tempered, easy to care for, and readily available. If you’re considering a reptile as a pet, leopard geckos are a great choice. To make sure you’re prepared to care for your new pet reptile, here are few things you need to know before getting a leopard gecko.

Leopard Geckos Live a Long Time. They have a longer life span than many similar-sized reptiles, and for that matter, they can live longer than many pets in general. It’s not uncommon for leopard geckos to live 20 years in captivity. Having a pet leopard gecko is a long-term commitment.

Leopard geckos eat live food. They are insectivores, meaning their diet consists of live insects. Yes, this means that in addition to your leopard gecko, you need to keep live bugs in the house or look for a supplier of these insects. They usually eat mealworms, crickets, and dubia roaches so before owning a leopard gecko you must know where and how to supply them their favorite foods.

Leopard geckos also need supplements. As much as people take supplements, leopard geckos also need this to protect their health and to live longer. Geckos need protein and calcium which can boost their bone and muscles. No worries about these supplements since we have them for sale on our website!

Another thing you need to know is the setup. Most of the pet owners use a vivarium for their geckos, but some breeders prefer to use a rack system since it saves space and would not consume too much time in cleaning. Whichever you choose to use, you must assure that your geckos are safe and comfortable. For vivarium, you need to make it more natural. You must choose the right substrate and fill it up with plants and hides because they always want to hide in the dark. It is also better to have a cold and hot area in their place so they can place themselves to their preferred temperature.

Geckos also need heat pads. Since leopard geckos are more active while the sun is down, they do not bask like other reptiles. Instead, they absorb most of their heat from the ground. This means instead of UVB lights like other pet reptiles, leopard geckos need an under-the-tank heat mat. They depend on belly heat for proper digestion, so don’t forget the heat mat.

You must also know that sand substrate is bad for leopard geckos. Leopard geckos come from the desert regions of Pakistan, India, and Afghanistan, but that doesn’t mean they are most comfortable on the sand. Sand can be swallowed and block the leopard gecko’s digestive system causing impaction.

With any new pet, you want to make sure you know what you’re getting into. Leopard geckos have a long life span and are not a casual commitment. Like any animal, they require special care.
