Are Crested Geckos Good Pets for Beginners?

Are Crested Geckos Good Pets for Beginners?
Choosing the right pet can be an exciting yet daunting task, especially for beginners. For those considering a beginner friendly reptile companion, crested geckos have gained popularity in recent years. These unique creatures offer an array of benefits, making them a fantastic choice for first-time reptile owners. In this blog, we will explore why crested geckos are excellent pets for beginners and what you need to know before bringing one home.

Why crested geckos are beginner friendly pets?
Let's take a look!

1. Low Maintenance: One of the standout features of crested geckos is their low maintenance requirements. Unlike some other reptiles, they don't need elaborate heating or lighting setups. Crested geckos thrive in room temperature conditions, making it easier for beginners to maintain their ideal environment. Additionally, they don't require UVB lighting, which simplifies the setup of their enclosure.

2. Compact Size: Another advantage of crested geckos is their relatively small size. They typically grow to about 8 to 10 inches in length, making them suitable for individuals with limited space. Their compact size also means their enclosure setup can be more manageable, requiring less space and fewer resources.

3. Docile Nature: Crested geckos have a generally calm and docile temperament, which is ideal for beginners who may be hesitant or inexperienced in handling reptiles. While every gecko has its unique personality, crested geckos are known for being tolerant of gentle handling. This makes them an excellent choice for those looking to interact with their pets and develop a bond over time.

4. Nocturnal Behavior: For individuals with busy daytime schedules, crested geckos' nocturnal behavior is a significant advantage. These geckos are primarily active at night, making them more accessible to observe and interact with during evenings and early mornings. This characteristic can be appealing for people who work or go to school during the day.

5. Varied Diet: Feeding crested geckos is relatively straightforward. They are omnivores and have a diverse diet, consisting of fruit-based powdered diets and occasional live insects. This variety allows for flexibility in providing proper nutrition, and their powdered diets make feeding convenient and cost-effective. Additionally, their small appetites mean less frequent feeding compared to larger reptiles.

Remember, while calcium supplements are essential, it is also crucial to provide a balanced diet that includes other nutrients and vitamins necessary for a leopard gecko's overall well-being. We mainly use two supplement down below. These have been working best for us and the pink one is our favorite! :)
