Lava Rock (Drainage Layer)

Build a drainage layer that actually breathes.

Every bioactive terrarium needs a place for water to go. Without it, moisture pools around the roots, the substrate turns swampy, and you end up with root rot and odor.

This natural lava rock gives your build a true drainage layer. The rock sits at the bottom of the tank and creates an open pocket of air and space below your substrate.

Excess water drains down into it instead of sitting in the root zone, so your plants stay healthy and your soil stays the right kind of damp.

Lava rock is light, so it will not crush the layers above it or strain a tall build. It is porous, which means water moves through it freely and beneficial bacteria have a surface to colonize. And it holds its shape for the life of your enclosure. It will not break down, compact, or turn to mud the way cheaper fill does.

Pairs perfectly with our drainage access tube. Drop the tube into the lava rock layer and you can pull standing water out in seconds without tearing your build apart.

Rinse before use to clear any dust, then layer it across the floor of your tank before adding your substrate barrier and soil.
